Teens Risk Brain Damage in New TikTok “Chroming” Trend

Videos on TikTok are contributing to a resurgence in "huffing" or "chroming," the dangerous practice of inhaling toxic fumes from household items like markers or nail polish. Reversible Brain Mechanism Explains Memory Loss from Drug Abuse

Scientists have uncovered a mechanism in the brain that explains how drugs like methamphetamine and PCP impair cognitive functions, particularly memory. The study shows that these drugs trigger neurotransmitter switching in the cerebral cortex, where excitatory glutamate neurons switch to inhibitory GABA neurons, leading to memory deficits. Interestingly, researchers were able to reverse this switch and restore memory performance in mice using molecular tools and the antipsychotic drug clozapine. This discovery could pave the way for developing therapies to counteract drug-induced cognitive impairments and other brain disorders.

Substance Abuse Beyond Dopamine and Impulsivity

Researchers shed new light on why some individuals are more vulnerable to substance abuse than others, focusing on the relationship between impulsivity, dopamine production, and cocaine use. Through a study on rats, they discovered that impulsivity predicts cocaine consumption not through dopamine production capacity but possibly through the control of its release.

Autistic Individuals More Likely to Use Recreational Drugs to Self-Medicate

While those with autism are less likely to use substances than those who are not on the autism spectrum, those who do are more likely to self-medicate for their mental health symptoms. Those with ASD who self-medicate report they do so to improve focus and attention and, in some cases, to mask ASD symptoms.
